Welcome to Burns Night

Welcome to Burns night, I am so happy you came! I love having guests. I want you to feel comfortable and at home here so let me answer a few questions you might have…..

What is Burns night?

Burns night, also termed a Burns supper, is a celebration of the life and works of the poet Robert Burns; Scottish by birth and held in fond regard by Scots all over the world, his life and poetry speak to the struggles common to all people. It is an evening of food, drink, entertainment, and friendship.  It is an event that transcends time, geographical borders, political, and religious beliefs to bring people together in celebration of the everyman.

Who can host a Burns night?

Anyone! This is a point I want to make very clear, you don’t need to be an expert on Robert Burns, poetry, or Scotland, all a host/hostess needs is a desire to celebrate what  the man represents.  You can learn as you go, learn as a group, educate each other or just enjoy the company.

Who do you invite to Burns night?

Anyone! It is helpful to form a core group that you believe will return year after year, but people move into and out of all of our lives. Invite anyone whose company you enjoy and with whom you would want to spend a fun evening.

When is Burns night held?

Anytime! Traditionally,  in the last few hundred years , it is held on the anniversary of his birth, January 25th,  but  originally it was held in July on the anniversary of his death. I seriously doubt Robbie would mind when you celebrate him, he would just be honored to be remembered. Make your mark, pick  your date, the key is to do it the same time every year and, yes, it WILL become an annual event!

Where is a Burns night held?

Anywhere! Seriously, a home, large or small, an apartment, a dorm room, a dining hall, a pub or restaurant, a cabin in the mountains, venue is not important. What is important, (are you getting this?) is that you want to do this. Your venue will determine to a large extent how many guests you can invite but other than that be creative, find a place and do it!

Why hold a Burns night?

Why not? Do you enjoy a nice evening with friends, family and acquaintances? Do you like good food and good drink ? Do you like music, conversation, poetry, laughter, and learning new things? If you answered Yes to any of these, you should hold a Burns night!
