Burns Supper

THE SUPPER

The friends that gathered that first night to remember their friend simply sang his songs, recited his poems  told stories about Rabbie, had a simple dinner of Haggis, neeps and tatties, and drank, I am sure, more than a few whisky toasts to his memory. This remains the essence of a Burn’s supper.
Suppers come in all sizes, from a few whisky loving friends in a home or pub,  to a sit down dinner for a thousand guests at a dedicated venue. The menu varies from a small haggis with mashed turnips and potatoes to an eight course meal complete with white gloved waiters. All you need for a Burn’s supper is good friends that either love Scotland, Robert Burns, whiskey, poetry, good food, or their host/hostess… and a place to hold the event.
I hosted my first Burn’s night in my home. It consisted of nine people, eight of whom had little clue as to what the evening would involve other than food and whiskey! I had done my homework and the evening went well, but the successive years have gotten progressively better as people become more familiar, and more comfortable with the protocol.
Burn’s night is what you make it, what you want it to be, but it is always fun, always memorable, always leaves you looking forward to next year…if you do it right.
